Tachograph Limousine Regulations

For your safety there are a number of regulations which limousines and limousine hire companies need to adhere to before they pick you and your friends up for a big night out. These safety accessories may include dividers to keep you and your fellow part goers from disturbing your chauffeur while he drives, or chauffeur operated locks on the doors so you don’t accidentally open your door into oncoming traffic.

However, while these are additions some limo hire companies make as they have seen the need for an extra safety level in certain situations, there are also safety accessories which are part of limousine law. For example, it is a current limousine law that vehicles which are rated to carry over eight passengers, or limousines which weigh over 3.5 tonnes must be fitted with a tachograph. A tachograph keeps track of the speeds the limousine has travelled over a 24 hour period, as well as the amount of hours that chauffeur has worked.

The limousines’ tachographs are used in conjunction with a new book of guidelines which regulate the amount of hours chauffeurs can work, and if your limousine hire company tries to tell you they can’t afford to get you this information, remind them that the booklet is free.

For the same vehicles which are rated to carry over eight passengers, or limousines which are over 3.5 tonnes, they are also required to be fitted with speed limiters. Limousines which are exempt from needing a speed limiter are those which have an engine which does not meet Euro 3 or higher specifications for emissions. If this is the case, the declaration needs to be completed in the limousine’s inspection manual. Also, as with all advancements in laws and regulations, not all enforcement officers are always readily aware of them. Therefore, these limousines should also keep a copy of this declaration in their limousine.
